What color are your eyes? Do you have the same color as your mom or your dad? And where did they get their eye color from? We inherit our eye colors — but where did it all start? The most common eye color is brown, with 55% of the world’s population sporting it, hazel next, then blue, and finally green. With blue being one of the least common eye colors, it would be easier to see where it came from. Well, according to researchers and their studies, blue-eyed people may all be linked to one specific ancestor who started the beauty of blue eyes.
10,000 years ago, a person in the northwestern part of the Black Sea Region had blue eye,s and that’s why roughly 8% of the worlds population also has blue eyes. According to Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicina and his colleagues at the University of Copenhagen, we all used to have brown eyes.
The amount of melanin in the eyes determines the color. The amount in blue eyes compared to those with brown and green is a very small difference. More than 99.5% of the 800 people in a study were found to have the same mutation, and the one slight outlier still had blue eyes (but with a small brown spot). These people all had blue eyes but ranged “from fair-skinned, blond-haired Scandinavians to dark-skinned, blue-eyed people living in Turkey and Jordan”.
Proffesor Eiberg says, “From this we can conclude that all blue eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor. They have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA.” This mutation is neither good nor bad – all it is is a change in DNA. This change doesn’t affect chances of survival. “It simply shows that nature is constantly huffing the human genome, creating a genetic cocktail of human chromosomes and trying out different changes as it does so.” Blue eyes have spread throughout Northern Europe and Southern Russia so much possibly because it was considered highly attractive and therefore more sexually appealing, encouraging reproduction – and therefore reproduction the the trait in people’s offspring. Blue, brown, hazel, or green – all eyes are beautiful.
